City Living in KL
On our journey to Indonesia, we decided to make a quick pit stop in KL, mostly because of the convenience and price of the flights – direct flights from Hat Yai were cheap and then onward to Medan also very cheap. I have been to Malaysia before, and for me, it was one of the real hidden gems of my trip. It’s less popular than say Thailand or Vietnam for backpackers, but has just as much there. I really loved the food last time, and found the people to be very warm and hospitable. So we planned a few days in the city, maybe do some shopping and enjoy some city life.
KL is an incredibly modern city and has some of the biggest and best malls in the world, actually there are malls seemingly everywhere – especially if you stay in the Bukit Bintang area, and you literally walk across the city inside, taking foot bridges, underpasses and walkways between the malls, all in AC haha.
There are also countless high rises, and even the recently opened Merdeka building, which is the 2nd tallest building in the world.
We decided to splurge a little (relatively – I mean we only spent £26 a night haha, but it was one of the more expensive places we stayed) and we booked a room in a high rise with an infinity pool with the BEST views of the KL skyline. It was amazing. And the sunsets from up here were incredible.

We visited a few malls, and walked over to the Petronas towers and KLCC park.

The first full day, we went out and got a roti canai breakfast (which had been one of my faves last time) and then headed to the Berjaya Times Square mall, which has a rollercoaster inside it!! We both decided that this was a bit of a once in a lifetime experience and paid the entrance fee to the theme park (about £16 each), but we definitely got our money’s worth and went on all the rides, including the rollercoaster – 5 times hahaha

We then walked over to the Merdeka building to see it up close, it was very impressive.

That evening we walked along Jalan Alor, and the beer street to grab a drink.

The next day we first headed out to a little vegan cafe just near Pavillion mall, and had a great nasi lemak. Then we got a grab taxi to take us to Batu Caves, a really cool Hindu temple built into a cave just to the north of Kuala Lumpur. I didn’t come here last time, and was really glad we decided to this time.

The last 2 nights, we moved hotels to another sky rise, this time an apartment with full kitchen and washing machine so we could sort all our washing, it also had a pool, but it was only on the 6th floor haha, we did some city living – I got a haircut, and we bought something we needed for the rest of our trip from the malls.

On the last day, we actually just took a taxi over to the “biggest decathlon in Malaysia” haha and got a few bits, like some leech socks and a UV head cover to keep us going. But we did head out that night to take a last look at the Petronas towers at night and watch the light show there. We also found a beyond burger 😍

Just a short stop in Malaysia this time to get ready for our flight to Medan and the next 30 days in Indonesia!! Exciting!!
