Tobacco Caye: Why DIY is Better Than the Ragga Sailing Trip
If you’re backpacking Belize, you’ll inevitably hear about the “Ragga Sailing Trip”—a three-day party boat from Caye Caulker to Dangriga. It’s a cult classic, the “done thing,” and for many, it’s the highlight of Belize. But for us? It was a hard pass.
As a vegan and a dedicated wildlife nerd, the idea of a “fishing frenzy” where the group catches their own dinner right off the reef just didn’t sit right. We wanted to see the fish in their habitat, not on a dinner plate. If you prefer to arrange your own travel in Central America and prioritize authentic, low-impact encounters, going to Tobacco Caye independently is a much better shout.

Why We Skipped the “Must-Do” Sailing Trip
- The Ethics of the “Frenzy”: After researching the trip and watching videos of the “fishing frenzy” on deck, we realized it clashed with our values. If you’re vegan or vegetarian, watching the reef’s inhabitants being hauled up for entertainment can be a bit of a buzzkill.
- The Autonomy of the Caye: On a boat, you’re on someone else’s schedule. On Tobacco Caye, the reef is your backyard. You can snorkel at 6 AM, 2 PM, or midnight if you want. Your pace, your rules.
- Avoiding the “Backpacker Bubble”: While the sailing trip is a great way to meet people, it can feel like a floating hostel. By DIY-ing it to Tobacco Caye, you find a level of tranquility that a boat with 20+ people just can’t offer.

How to get to Tobacco Caye (The DIY “Go Slow” Logistics)
Getting there independently is a mission that requires a bit of grit, but it’s totally doable if you have a bit of optimism and a fast taxi driver.
- Caye Caulker to Belize City: Take the first ferry (usually 6:30 AM).
- The Dash to the Bus: Grab a taxi from the ferry terminal to the Novelo’s Bus Station.
- The Chicken Bus: Catch the bus to Dangriga. This route takes you down the Hummingbird Highway—easily the most beautiful road in Belize, flanked by jungle-covered mountains. Keep your eyes peeled for raptors!
- The Boat to the Caye: Once in Dangriga, head to the pier. Most lodges (like Reef’s End) coordinate their own boats.
Expert Tip: Belize time is real. We arrived at the bus station just as our bus was pulling out. Our taxi driver literally blocked the bus in so we could jump on. Fortune favors the bold!

Is it worth the effort?
100%. By organizing it yourself, you trade the “party boat” vibe for a tranquil, authentic island experience. You’re not just a passenger on a tour; you’re a traveler in one of the most unique spots on the Belize Barrier Reef.
